Mission:

PRETOMA is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in San José, Costa Rica since June of 1996. We are an organization made up of local biologists, naturalist guides, conservationists, and citizens concerned about the fate of the sea turtle and shark populations and the marine habitat in general.

PRETOMA seeks to protect the populations of sea turtles that nest and feed in the coastal and marine environments of Costa Rica, and the habitats on which they depend. We strive to work in a manner that respects and satisfies the economic and cultural needs of the coastal communities and other groups that directly interact with sea turtles, such as fishermen.

We also seek to protect endangered shark species from over-fishing and incidental capture, and educate the public about the rapid decline of shark populations worldwide.

To reach our goals, we work in close conjunction with coastal communities, the fishing industry, NGOs, academic institutions, government institutions and international environmental organizations and volunteers.
